Breathwork and Pranayama for a Healthy Life

This 6-week online (via Zoom) and in-studio course is for everyone, whether you’re a seasoned yoga practitioner or a newbie on the mat. The course focuses on teaching and refining breath-work skills and learning about the yogic tradition of pranayama to enhance well-being and health.
This course is a journey of self-development and is mainly practical rather than theoretical.
Practising breathwork can have a cleansing, meditative and calming influence on our body and mind. Practised correctly it can be used to shake us out of old patterns and cultivate vitality and health. The benefits of breath-work and pranayama techniques are many and varied:
- Develops body awareness, concentration, mindfulness, focus and stamina.
- Fights stress, anxiety and depression.
- Soothes and calms the nervous system.
- Aids muscle relaxation and pain management.
- Helps oxidise the blood and the respiratory system.
- Slows down the heart rate, lowers and stabilises blood pressure.
- Increases energy levels and boosts the immune system.
- Helps fight against insomnia and sleep disorders.
In this course, we will specifically focus on how breathwork and pranayama can be used for dealing with stress, anxiety, breathlessness and insomnia.
Laurent has worked extensively with clients who have suffered breathlessness caused by Covid-19, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. As well as those suffering from mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. Laurent studies and practices pranayama in the system of Swami Gitananda and breath-work with The Minded Institute, a leading organisation for yoga therapy.
Structure of the course:
Week 1: Connecting and being with the breath – the anatomy of the breath.
Week 2: The foundation of pranayama: sectional breathing – expanding and increasing the breath.
Week 3: The rhythmic breath – the benefits of equal breathing and retention.
Week 4: The eight classical pranayamas – warming and energising breath-work
Week 5: The eight classical pranayamas – balancing and calming breath-work.
Week 6: Breath-work for stress, anxiety, and insomnia.
